General information:

Southeast University was the first to establish the program and discipline of biomedical engineering in China. In October 1984, Academician WEI Yu established the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Instruments, which was renamed to the Biological Science and Medical Engineering Department in August 1993, and officially became the School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering (BME) in August 2006.In 1993, the school set up the first Bio-electronics doctoral program in China; Biomedical Engineering became a national first-level discipline in 1997 and a national key discipline in 2002. In 1998, the school was approved to set up the postdoctoral program, which was rated as a national outstanding postdoctoral program in 2005 and 2010, respectively. In 2007,2012 and 2017, Biomedical Engineering ranked first in the national discipline assessment (marked A+).

Throughout its nearly three decades of development, the school has formed relatively sophisticated high-level talented person cultivation and advanced scientific research systems. The school currently has four departments: biomedical engineering, information & systems biology, medical & biological physics and brain & learning science. It has equipped with a comprehensive set of labs and education bases, which are including 1 national key and first-class discipline , 1 postdoctoral program and the specially-appointed professor post of Changjiang Scholars Program,1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, 1 national key laboratory, 1 provincial key laboratory and 1 national engineering practical education center, ect.In addition, there are more than 120 full-time teachers in the school; and the number of enrolled students is approximately 1042.

      Discipline

In addition to the second-level discipline of neural information engineering, students are also learning science, biological information technology, medical image and electronics, biomedical nanotechnology, biomedical materials and other important development directions under biomedical engineering, a first-level discipline. Moreover, the school has two undergraduate programs, i.e. biomedical engineering and biological information technology.
Biomedical engineering, as an emerging and frontier discipline involving informatics, bio-medicine as well as chemistry, physics and materials science, is mainly used to solve technical problems in medical science and research, develop new biomedical materials, devices and medical instruments with theories, methods and technologies of electronic information engineering and biomedical materials engineering, which are employed in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and recovery of disease.

      Talent Cultivation

Distinguished talent cultivation modes, range from pure engineering degree, double degrees in medical and engineering to 7-year bachelor-master system, form a relatively sophisticated talent cultivation system; besides the sole 7-year system implementing unit approved by the Ministry of Education, the school is also a national innovative experimental area for talent cultivation modesand, therefore, becomes a national specialized program construction point.

BGI-SEU National Engineering Practice Education Center and the multidisciplinary, targeted, bachelor-master sharing experimental teaching platform have been built, stressing on close combination of class and extracurricular activities. The school has national high-quality courses and model teachers. In the recent five years, more than 100 doctors and nearly 500 masters have been cultivated, including 6 doctors who have won the National Outstanding Doctorate Paper Award.

      Scientific Research

The school currently has scientific research bases the national key bio-electronics laboratory, the key laboratory of biological materials and instruments in Jiangsu, a medical electronics laboratory, a biomedical signal and image processing laboratory, and a biomechanics laboratory as well as high-tech transformation application centers like the Suzhoukey laboratory of biomedical materials and technology, the Suzhou key laboratory of environment and bio-safety and the Wuxikey laboratory of bio-chip.

In recent five years, the school has presided over or undertaken more than 170 scientific projects of national, provincial or ministerial level, including national key scientific research program (973); wherein, for 2 items of 973 Program, the school obtained a scientific research fund of RMB173 million. Nearly 400 papers have been published in journals such as SCI and etc. Over 120 patents have been authorized. In addition, the school also has won 8 natural science and scientific & technological progress awards of national, provincial or ministerial level.
