Title: Transforming Surface Plasmon Resonance into Mobile BiosensingTechnology via Advanced Nanoplasmonic Devices

Abstract: Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensing is a powerful label freebiomolecular detection technique used for drug screening, proteincharacterization, enzymatic kinetics studies and living cell membraneimaging.  However special expensiveoptical spectroscopy equipment and systems are required for SPR sensing andimaging and they are not available in most research laboratories.  In my talk, I will present our work ondeveloping colorimetric and photonic resonator integrated nanoplasmonicresonance devices. Our colorimetric nano Lycurgus Cup Array (nanoLCA) sensor isthe first colorimetric SPR sensor device (not based on colloidal nanoparticles)ever reported with a record high sensitivity so that the molecular and liquid SPRsensing can be visualized as transmitted or reflected color changes by colorcamera, photodiode or even naked eyes. With such a unique nanoplasmonic device,SPR biomolecular sensing and imaging is enabled on most ubiquitous instrumentssuch as bright-field microscope, microplate reader and smartphones. I will showthe label-free colorimetric and intensity-based nanoplasmonic sensing andimaging of DNA hybridization, cancer biomarker protein binding kinetics anddrug metabolisms.  I will also discussabout the nanoplasmon enhanced colorimetric bioassay applications.

Biography: Prof. Logan Liuobtained his Ph.D. degree in bioengineering from University ofCalifornia-Berkeley and UC-San Francisco. He finished his postdoctoral trainingin the Helen Diller comprehensive cancer center at San Francisco as well asLawrence Livermore national lab where he was a Lawrence fellow. He is now anassociate professor in Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering andDepartment of Bioengineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Hehas published over 100 journal and conference papers as well as several bookchapters.  His research focuses ondesigning and developing integrative bionanophotonic and mobile sensing technologiesand devices for the applications of advanced nanomanufacturing, bioimaging,cancer diagnostics and therapy, environmental sensing and mobile health.  Dr. Liu has been awarded for several majorawards in the past including Lawrence fellowship, Presidential Early-CareerAward for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), lab-on-a-chip emerging investigator, Vodafone wireless innovationaward and Nokia sensing XChallenge distinguished award.  He is an elected fellow of American Institutefor Medical and Biological Engineers. His research works on colorimetric nanoplasmonicdevice and mobile phone nanosensor were reported by Forbes, Wired magazine, HuffingtonPost, NBC, and many other major news media.
